The foundations for literacy and learning are laid long before a child starts school. Yet too many children, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds, miss out on the early language and communication support they need.
The National Literacy Trust wanted a film that would bring its Early Words Matter programme to life, showing how it connects families with local people, services and support where they live. Aimed at prospective corporate funders, the film needed to communicate this joined-up approach while highlighting the potential for lasting change.

I developed the creative concept, script and visual direction for a two-minute, character-led animation that follows a young child and their family.
The story moves from the challenges families face in accessing early years support to the programme's approach to bringing local people, services and organisations together, building towards a hopeful conclusion and a clear call to action.
The film features a voiceover by children's TV presenter Andy Day, which I directed to bring warmth and personality to the storytelling.

I wanted to create a visual style that felt playful and full of personality, while keeping the storytelling human and relatable. Drawing on the National Literacy Trust's extensive brand palette, I developed a bold, colourful world with expressive characters and vibrant neon accents.
The animation combines everyday moments with visual metaphors, including growing plants and interwoven threads, to bring the programme's approach to life. Fluid transitions help maintain momentum and keep the story moving forward.
